Text-a-Librarian

Text-a-Librarian allows customers to directly communicate with the library through text messages. Simply text the keyword, ccplinfo to 66746. You will receive a confirmation and further instructions for saving the number to your contact. The library code will not be needed for any subsequent texts. Your question is assigned an anonymous user ID and will go to a Cumberland County librarian.

Text-a-Librarian partners with the top mobile carriers in the U.S. including (but not limited to): Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, Alltel, AT&T and Virgin Mobile, among many others. Text a Librarian is accessible to over 270 million mobile users in the U.S., covering 95% of all mobile phones.

Skype Station

The Headquarters library provides a computer with Skype installed for hearing impaired individuals, or military families who want to communicate with a loved one face to face. Skype enables face to face signing communication through the use of a computer and webcam. Skype station includes a link to purple.us/ps, a website offering communication services for the deaf and hearing-impaired. Book Magnifiers

Each library branch has book magnifiers available for use in the library. For more information, ask at the Information Desk.

Text to Speech in EBSCO Databases

EBSCO is a provider of high quality databases such as Academic Search Premier, Business Source Premier and Literary Reference Center. Full-text articles in html format can be read aloud using the Text to Speech feature. When viewing the Detailed Record, a Listen link in the tools on the right side of the screen appears when Text-To-Speech is available. EBSCO databases can be accessed at home through NC LIVE using your library card. Contact your local library for more information.

Audio and Large Print Books

Each library branch has audio books as well as large print books available for checkout. Audio books are also available for download through the North Carolina Digital Library.

North Carolina Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped

The North Carolina Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NCLBPH) is a special public library that circulates books and magazines especially made for persons who cannot use regular printed material because of a visual or physical disability. The library is located in Raleigh, but mails materials throughout the state. Click here for more information.

Screen Magnifiers

Each branch will soon be equipped with a screen magnifier that fits over a computer monitor
and is available for checkout to use in the adult computer lab. The magnifier allows you to see characters up to 30% larger than normal. A photo ID and valid library card is required. Contact your local library for more information.

Large Print Keyboard

Each branch will soon be equipped with a large print keyboard located at a catalog station. Use of this particular keyboard will be on a first come, first served basis.

Answer Book

The library's online searchable resource that provides basic information about agencies or organizations that can meet the human-service needs of customers. Customers can access the Answer Book from the library's home page, or by clicking here.

Mobile Outreach

The mobile outreach service takes materials to customers who are unable to visit the library due to health issues or reside in assisted living/nursing homes. For information, call (910) 307-3431.
